Below are therapies and treatment options we have for your periodontal care:
“Gingivitis is the inflammation of the gum tissues (gingiva)”. Inflammation is caused from inadequate cleaning of the oral tissues. Proper brushing and flossing will help prevent this inflammation from occurring.
Treatment usually consists of regular cleanings by a dental hygienist and brushing at least twice a day for 2 minutes and flossing daily. Regular maintenance is different for each individual. Once we get to know you mouth and you as a person we will better be able to define a plan of action for your oral care and overall health.
Non-surgical Periodontal therapy
Beyond gingivitis is the deterioration of the foundation that holds our teeth in our jaws. This foundation is our bone. When bacteria cause inflammation and are not removed it can cause a toxic environment which our bone does not like and therefore moves away from this toxicity. In doing this it causes bone loss and can be of varying degrees. Calculus or mineral deposits form below the
gum line and harbor bacteria that cause the toxic environment which in turn creates the environment that bone moves away from. Treatments are aimed at removing the mineral deposits first and then can be combined with delivery of antibiotics into the “pocketing” areas formed from the bone loss.
Scaling and Root Planing is the first recommended treatment for periodontal disease. It is aimed at going below the gum line and removing calculus or mineral deposits and the plaque build up, which produces and harbors bacteria, which release the toxins that cause bone loss.
Arestin is a localized antibiotic placed in between the tooth and the gums in conjunction with ScRP procedures. This will allow the destruction of the bacteria that are causing the bone loss to occur in and around your teeth.
Surgical Periodontal therapy
When Non- surgical therapies are completed and more treatment is necessary due to inadequate or a non-responsive environment, it may be determined by the dentist to do a more surgical approach. This can be any variation of treatments ranging from bone grafting (adding bone) to osstectomy or bone removal to create a more readily cleansable environment. In both options your home care and continued partnership with us as your care provider are top priority in defending and fighting off periodontal disease.
